You may have some basic questions about braces on your teeth. Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions about braces asked by patients.

Are braces painful?

Braces were once bulky and more painful than they are today. Nowadays, braces use high-tech wires and smaller brackets to produce shorter treatment times. While wearing braces in not pain-free, many people experience little pain. The most pain occurs right after the orthodontist adjusts your braces, but that pain remains only for a short time and is easily treated with over the counter medications.

How long will I need to wear my braces?

The average length of time people wear braces is between six months and three years. Your orthodontist will be able to give you an estimate of the amount of time you will wear your braces.

How frequently will I need to visit the Orthodontist?

Office visits occur about every four to six weeks.

Can I use a device that looks like a retainer instead of wearing braces?

Retainer-like teeth adjustment devices are usually for people that need only a slight adjustment in their bite. Braces are for individuals who need more serious teeth adjustment.

How long do I need to wear my retainer after my braces come off?

Because teeth are set in bone, you’ll need to wear your braces full time for a while. Eventually, you’ll only need to wear retainers at night. Retainers help hold your teeth in place until the bone around them grows and solidifies around the teeth. Your orthodontist will tell you if can discontinue wearing your retainer.

How often do I need to brush my teeth with braces?

Brushing and flossing are important when you wear braces. If you don’t routinely clean your braces, food and other debris will become stuck around the brackets. You should brush your teeth after every meal and before bed to keep your teeth as clean as possible while wearing braces. Also, routinely use a fluoride rinse to protect your teeth from cavities.

What foods should I avoid eating?

Hard, sticky foods like caramel and gummy bears should be avoided. These treats stick to teeth and give you a greater chance of getting cavities. Hard foods like carrots and apples take a lot of effort to chew. They may break off the brackets or snap the wires of your braces.

More questions about braces? Visit your local dentist. For me, that's Daniel J. Derksen, DDS, PLLC, my dentist in Lansing, Michigan. He was happy to walk me through all of my options when I had to get braces. Years later and my smile is the best it's ever been!

Like most affluent communities, the desert paradise of Palm
Springs, CA, offers a wealth of shopping options to the throngs who visit each
year. Besides the obvious choices of the malls and name brand shopping centers
that line Highway 111, there is variety to suit every taste and budget.

The first stop for any new visitor should be historic Palm Canyon Drive, the
main drag through downtown Palm Springs. Dotted with art galleries, antique
stores, and shops selling fashionable apparel for both street and poolside, the
strip also has an interesting collection of niche stores (dog related items,
old fashioned candy, and unique toys, to name a few) sure to appeal to all
members of the family. In addition, the presence of restaurants throughout the
area makes the Palm Canyon Drive area ideal for a leisurely stroll coupled with
a meal at an outdoors cafe.

A short trip outside of Palm Springs is the Desert Hills Premium Outlet Mall,
located west of the city on Interstate 10. With stores like Armani,

Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Prada, and
Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, this is the place to shop for designer names without
breaking the bank. With 180 stores at which to save, it's easily worth the 15
minute trip. And, if your thirst for bargains still isn't quenched, the Cabazon
Outlets are just a hop down the road, featuring only slightly less fancy
options as Guess, Reebok, and Tommy Bahama.

But for true bargains, locals know to visit the Palm Desert Street Fair on
weekend mornings at the College of the Desert in nearby Palm Desert. With more
than 300 vendors each Saturday and Sunday, the Fair draws people from all over
the valley to purchase local crafts and farmers market goods, as well as a
variety of commercial merchandise.

Finally, open Mondays through Saturdays during the day, the Collector's Corner
resale shop of bargains and one of a kind merchandise, including hand blown
glass, paintings, furniture, and a variety of clothing, from the simplest
t-shirt to the most elaborate gown. Benefiting the Eisenhower Medical Center,
the 15,000 square-foot Collector's Corner is the best thrift shop you've ever
seen, clean and organized with surprising treasures around every turn.

The longer you've been married, the harder it is to find novel ways to rekindle your relationship. Some couples don't even think about this important milestone, especially when they've been together for so many years already. But that's where problems can begin -- from a small tear to one big gaping hole that will be harder to sew back again.

Being together all the time can lessen the excitement and lead to loneliness from either partner. Research proves that celebrating the day of the couple's union can help strengthen their bond and spark memories of those times when the feeling was still "new". So how can you take back that time when you were just starting to fall in love? Share new, exciting activities together that you've never done before on your anniversary.

1. Visit a romantic town, which can be on the ocean or on the mountain. This article sums up five American cities you have to visit with a loved one. Go sightseeing, visit art galleries, go shopping, do something outdoors! Beautiful memories are made when you're doing something out of the ordinary.

2. Join a marriage retreat. Meet other couples like you and listen to great advice shared by a relationship expert. Venues are usually held at a quiet hotel or resort so the participants can have time to focus on each other and be part of the fellowship with people of same interests.

3. Upgrade your rings. Have they gone too tight or too loose? Have the rings lost their shine? It's time to return to the jeweler and have them upgraded. You can have them cleaned or better yet, melted down to form a new pair of custom rings.

4. Organize your photos. You'll have fun just browsing through old photos and the memories of the good times you've had together. Make a scrapbook that you can pass on to your children and grandchildren. Write notes about the photos and what makes that moment so special?

Celebrating an anniversary does not have to be expensive as long as you are both sincere in renewing and revitalizing your vows by being attentive to each other. Get rid of distractions and spend a day, a week, or even a month sharing your love for each other.

If there’s a physical substance that builds nations, then it
has to be steel. Steel is used in the construction of highways, bridges and
buildings, and is used in a variety of vital products to grow, such as
household appliances and cars. Here are a few of the top countries that will be
demanding the most amount of steel in the next decade.

China

It should come as no surprise that China is posed for super
expansive growth in the next decade. The largest population in the world
continues to see rises in household income, which allows them to spend more on
luxury products, which drives large amounts of industrial activity – all of
which require large amounts of steel. Luckily for China, they have large
quantities of iron ore internally, and are in fact the largest steel producer
in the world. Without having to pay larger premiums for steel, they can use
steel to build their nations at a lower rate than other countries.

Vietnam

Vietnam has been considered as a country with a huge
population with not enough income to support industrial growth for far too
long. The country continues to see an increasing demand in cars, and has seen a
sharp reduction in cars per 100 people throughout the country. With a
continuing demand in luxury items, and a high population that has more money to
spend, Vietnam should see a sharp increase in growth in the next ten years.

United Arab Emirates

and propelled the city as the unofficial capital of the Middle East. With an
ever expanding demand for oil, and an ideal physical location for trade, the
United Arab Emirates will expect to have a large amount of economic growth for
their relatively modest population size. Additionally, the immigration rate for
the country is the highest in the entire world, and all of which are primarily

When it comes to being a lawyer or a doctor or accountant, there always seems to be a clear and set path for you to follow. You graduate from undergrad, apply to graduate schools or take necessary exams, and then achieve a title or certificate that gives you necessary credentials to practice your profession. Organized and clean. However, things seem to be farther from the case when it comes to making a profession in human resource management.

The Human Resource Management Program at MSU is one of the top Human Resource MBA programs in the country, and many would dream to work there. However, what happens if you also get accepted to work in the human resources program at Boeing - One of the most highly sought after programs for human resource professionals in the world.

It isn't an easy choice, and it isn't the only profession that's like that. Many marketing and sales professionals also face the choice of going off to work at a great company where they will make money and possibly have a promising future, or enrolling at their dream MBA program.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but when I was a kid Halloween was a race to get your hands on as much candy as possible and you'd go to any extreme to make sure that you did. Regardless, I don't know if it's the general media-induced fear of kids being out at night (even with their parents), but things were slow and that left me with a bunch of leftover candy.

Of course, in the shopping trips I made preceding the candy holocaust that was not to be, I found a lot of good deals on assorted sweets I would never buy under other circumstances. One of which would be jelly beans. I can eat about five of them, and then I'm done. So I figured, why not leave them out in a bowl for guests? Good idea, right?

Well, it is until your schnauzer decides to climb on your furniture in the middle of the night and devour an entire pound of them. The aftermath was not pretty...at all. We're talking, carpet cleaning time here. Ugh...

Anyhow, note to self: Left unsupervised, even an otherwise well behaved dog will find his way into accessible sweets. If you're willing to do this, be prepared for the very gross aftermath.
Homeowners associations are becoming commonplace in many new
neighborhoods. If you are looking to buy a new home, make sure you
know about HOA benefits and restrictions before you sign all of the
paperwork. Make sure you will be able to live in the community before you move.

Homeowners associations are designed to help improve
community appearance and value. Still, there are always little things that can
cause annoyances to residents. Read all of the rules and regulations before you
buy because sometimes you may not be able to live within the parameters. Here
are some common restrictions that can become trouble spots:

Pontoon boats and RV’s must be stored out of sight.

Trash cans cannot be visible, except on trash-pickup day.

All cars must be parked in the garage (not on the street,
not in the driveway) at all times.

Exterior and interior change requests must be approved by
the HOA before you make them.

Remember, if you enter a neighborhood with an association,
you are not able to opt out. You are stuck in the association until you move,
so be willing to live within the guidelines.

Being part of a HOA is, by in large, a benefit
— despite a few extra rules that improve your neighborhood. Your HOA will
probably do regular walk-bys and drive-bys to make sure homes are in
compliance. Keep up with regular maintenance and repairs to save a lot of work
in the future because problems escalate into major repairs. It is a good idea
to set aside about 1% of the purchase price of your home for annual
repairs and preventative maintenance. Some trouble spots often include interior
and exterior paint, gates, landscaping and roofing tiles. You can even ask them about their recommendations for professional services that ensure you are in compliance. This is particularly important if you are a business or working in a dangerous area. An example of such a service would be property condition assessments from Energy Finance Analytics, which is an external third party service.

If you are not in compliance with your HOA’s rules, you will
probably be sent a letter telling you the problem and requesting that you fix
it. You will then be given a grace period during which you can fix the problem
at your own cost, followed by a re-inspection. If standards are still not met,
you will receive a second letter, and the complaint is given to an attorney.
The usual punishment is payment for when the HOA corrects the problem itself.

Your homeowners association is also designed to work for
you. If you have any complaints, you can submit them to the office and they
will be evaluated and taken care of. If the HOA is not responsible for the
repair, like a broken street lamp or potholes, the complaint will be forwarded
to the proper city offices. The association is also responsible for maintaining
community-owned property such as median landscaping or certain fences and walls.
Before you join a community, make sure its HOA does not have any outstanding
financial situations you will be forced to help pay for because of major
projects, maintenance or repairs.

HOA organizations are created to help you, the
homeowner, have a comfortable, beautiful neighborhood to live in. Communities
that have HOAs are more likely to increase in value and at a faster rate than
those that don’t have homeowners associations because they are well-maintained
and respected. If you are looking at a house in a neighborhood that has such an
association, make sure you do all the research before you buy a home so you can
live more comfortably within the rules and regulations.

According to www.marketresearch.com, Switzerland is one of the most frequently traveled countries in all of Europe. That stat to me was a bit surprising to me, as I would have expected the big countries of Great Britian, France and Germany would take top honors, especially with their iconic buildings and historical sites.

However, it's quite hard to argue with the natural beauty of Switzerland, something that in my opinion is unrivaled in all of Europe. The Swiss Alps are one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world, and are frequented by the outdoorsy type from all over the world. Switzerland is also a relatively inexpensive country to travel across as well. Many hostels like this hostel in Interlaken Switzerland are on the affordable side for travelers looking to get the most value out of their traveling experience. The Swiss franc has also gained 24% against the euro since 2009, giving Switzerland a nice economic boost relative to their European neighbors.
By this point in time, I believe everyone who reads my blog knows just how much I love gadgets, tools, calculators, and little
interactive sites that give you instant feedback. Why I love them, I do not
know, but I do, so that’s that. Today I found an extremely “different” type of interactive
tool, different and a bit morbid.

Today’s tool, is a “Death Calculator” in

Anyhow, go through, honestly answer all of the questions and

today, start exercising, daily. You can’t go wrong.

While working in the environmental consulting industry for quite some time, I started developing a keen interest in companies that do what they can to be eco-friendly. These companies lead the way with developing greener technologies that reduce our environmental footprint as well as saving us consumers some serious cash. Thanks to several sources, I put together a list of some of the greenest companies we can give thanks to:

1. Dell - They do a lot to try and reduce their total waste, and they can back up what they promise.
2. Hewlett Packard - HP began reporting greenhouse gases associated with its supply chain long before any other major tech companies were doing so.
3. Johnson & Johnson - In their broad industry representation, they stand out from their competitors for taking substantial efforts to reduce waste and energy.
4. Adobe - The buildings Adobe uses certainly are not cheap, but they are extremely energy efficient.
5. Nike - Having strong green roots from their very start, the sports giant has not lost sight of its core environmental foundation and continues to raise awareness for many environmental issues.
A world without engineers is quite unimaginable. There would be no roads, bridges, electricity, computers; basically there would be no society. One of the great organized activities that trains and tests the minds of future engineers are steel bridge clubs. Run through colleges and universities across the world, and sponsored by the ASCE/AISC, steel bridge clubs and concrete canoe clubs compete on a yearly basis to see who can build the best steel bridge or concrete canoe. Using materials like cold drawn steel materials supplied from Capital Steel and Wire and basic concrete, students must work together to build a lightweight and sturdy canoe or bridge that could work well large scale. What's more difficult is that the students have a limited time window to complete the tasks.

Although it is a competition, it is a great opportunity for students to meet similar students from across the world and to network with potential employers that help sponsor and put on the event. This year the event will be held at Clemson University in just a few weeks. If you're looking for other steel bridge clubs to get in touch with, take a look at this steel bridge club directory, which also has a custom Google search bar to search for activities that other related clubs are involved in.Buz Stufhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02308093614559517992noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5782239827467453694.post-310779424545931882012-04-11T13:23:00.003-07:002012-08-23T07:19:38.915-07:00Butterfly - The best insect

Sometimes I forget that Butterflies are insects. Their bright and beautiful colors fluttering around the sky is a classic depiction of a bright summer day. The Egyptians admired butterflies and included them in their hieroglyphs over 3,500 years ago, and the Aztecs associated butterflies with fire and war. Today they're more than just a bug, they're considered one of the most fragile and delicate creatures on our planet, and they describe a state of nervousness when you have "butterflies in your stomach".

Many businesses and products are named after butterflies, including Butterfly, a restaurant in San Francisco, and the Valtorc butterfly valve that looks quite similar to a butterfly, but has absolutely no connection to the insect. What do you think about butterflies? Can you think of a better insect? That got me wondering what the fastest growing economies in the world currently are. I did some research and found an article by Business Insider. What really surprised me was how not a single North American country was on the list. Here are the countries broken down in order:

Zambia

Qatar

Lebanon

Jordan

China

Argentina

Estonia

Turkey

Sri Lanka

India

Nigeria

Egypt

Kazakhstan

Indonesia

Lithuania

Quite a large part of their expansion is due to improvements in transportation systems, healthcare improvements, and a larger percentage of educated individuals staying in their home countries. With all this growth requires a huge amount of construction, and these countries demand more tractors, trench shoring equipment and scaffolding systems to keep up with their growth. All of the growth is quite amazing, and it's all taking place out of view!
